Colonial History

Houses & Estates of old Glamorgan wasfirst published in 2017 and was a greatsuccess for the Glamorgan Spring BayHistorical Society. The print run of over a thousandcopies sold out quickly, earned some generousreviews, and won the Marita Bardenhagen Awardfor Local History in 2018. Importantly, it engagedthe local community and alerted a wide audienceto the magnificent heritage of nineteenth-centurybuildings in the former Glamorgan municipalityand the need to conserve the structures, bothgrand and modest, for future generations. We hope that the success of the publication hasbeen influential in the continuing conservationof colonial heritage on the east coast.Since publication, the Society has continuedits investigations into the heritage buildings ofGlamorgan. New discoveries and information havecome to light since our first edition and we feel itwould be remiss of us not to include them in thisedition. Some examples are the location of theoriginal Belmont (originally William Talbot's firstMalahide homestead), the identity of the convictbuilder 'Old Bull', and we are adding here theproperties The Plains, Sherbourne Lodge and Redcliffe.Such discoveries are important because, in anenvironment where planning and development attractheadlines, evidence that connects us to our uniquepast and lifts our self-knowledge are invaluable. This year, 2021, is the bicentenary of Europeansettlement of Glamorgan. This is being marked by anumber of commemorations, never forgetting thatthis settlement came at the expense of the loss of lifeand land by the indigenous inhabitants and futuredisruption of their way of life, forever. The Societyhopes that this Second Edition, with all its newcontent, will be a further valued contribution to thecontinued study and preservation of the built andnatural environment of the east coast of Tasmania.
